Speaker Event: Derek Leahy: “Farm Solutions = Climate Solutions”
December 11, 2019 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
Farm Solutions = Climate Solutions
For two years, Rural Routes to Climate Solutions has been using a climate solution co-benefits narrative to engage farmers and ranchers in Alberta on issues connected to climate change—biodiversity, carbon sequestration, renewable energy. In fact, climate change is rarely mentioned in the project’s work. Instead, climate solutions that can help farms and ranches become more resilient, diverse and sustainable are front and centre.
In this presentation, you will learn how Rural Routes shapes and delivers this narrative, a narrative that communicates the on-farm benefits of climate action. You will also hear about the Alberta agricultural producers who are already putting climate solutions into action.
The presentation raises an interesting question as well: is there anything inherently wrong with not talking directly about climate change when you are talking about climate change?
The event is free, but please RSVP to Eventbrite.
Derek Leahy is the Director of Rural Routes to Climate Solutions, an Alberta-based project providing learning opportunities for farmers and ranchers to find out how they can benefit from climate solutions. He has a decade of climate organizing experience spanning three continents—Europe, Canada and Australia—and his articles on climate issues and clean energy have been published in The Narwhal and National Observer. He co-led Food Secure Canada’s Eat Think Vote campaign in 2015 and played an important role in the 100% Possible March in Ottawa that same year. He even worked for Ecology Ottawa at one point. Derek is also an avid farmhand and has worked on farms in Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta.
