Elizabeth May at Ground Zero Nepean:
Climate Change and the Sept 21 Tornadoes
We are pleased to announce that Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party of Canada, will be the very special guest speaker at our AGM this year taking place Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at Tornado Ground Zero in Arlington Woods, Nepean.
On September 21, 2018, six tornadoes touched down on the last day of summer in the Greater Ottawa-Gatineau Area. The second tornado cut a swath several hundred metres wide through old-Nepean, flattening the heritage white pine forest of Arlington Woods, ripping off roofs, felling trees, and damaging homes from Cedarview to Merivale Road—causing millions of dollars in damage to public and private property.

While these kinds of events have been rare in Canada, natural disasters like the tornadoes of September 21st are becoming more common. Where the Greater Ottawa-Gatineau Area normally experiences one tornado every 10 years or so, last summer we experienced eight tornadoes—six coming on that fateful Friday.
A recent report by the University of Waterloo’s Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation found governments at all levels across the country need to take immediate action to make the country’s infrastructure—highways, railways, and water supply systems—more resilient or face increasingly catastrophic financial loses in the future. Even the Canadian military considers the increase in natural disasters to be a threat to national security.
Greens know there is a direct correlation between the rise in global temperatures, climate change and the increasing frequency of weather-related natural disasters around the world. We have a plan to fight climate change, and now more than ever Canadians need to hear what we have to say.
So, please join us Wednesday, February 20th to hear Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party of Canada, discuss Climate Change and what we can do to protect ourselves and our loved-ones from the effects of this man-made catastrophe on our communities.
If you are coming, please RSVP so we have an idea of the numbers. And, please help us get the word out by sharing this event on social media and through email with your friends and family. Everyone is welcome!
